It’s been a great start to 2025. I’ve been to some amazing concerts and got the chance to do an interview with Brave Rival before one of their shows. Preparing this Substack for launch has been so fulfilling — thank you for the support so far! I’ve started dancing at a new studio closer to me and I absolutely love it. Regularly attending commercial dance classes was a highlight of last year. I’m grateful to have it back in my life again and to connect with music in a different way.
For this first newsletter, I’m keeping it simple and highlighting some of my favourite songs I listened to last month. Cece Natalie is still on repeat. I finally re-listened to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan for the first time since I found her music in September 2023. Through recommendations, I found lots of new artists — Blanks, Susannah Joffe, Ella More, Slayyyter. I am excited to keep up to date with new releases and discovering even more magical music to love!
EAT - Zoe Ko
This is my most exciting new artist discovery — her catchy alt-pop is full of flirtation and personality with rock and electronic elements. I love the guitar riff and the conversational style of the vocal delivery. The hook is stuck in my head. On a side note, I’m also obsessed with her outfits!!! Waiting for the day she plays a London show.
NO HANDS - UPSAHL
My diva……. UPSAHL. She’s one of my favourite artists with astonishing musical talent, as seen by her stripped back performance of this song which breaks down all the musical elements in real time. The build and release of tension in this song is so well done. She put on an incredible show when I saw her live last November and this song was a high point of the night.
Dear god - Tate McRae
Tate McRae’s new album was a slight let down for me, but this is definitely a standout from the record. This is one of her best storytelling moments in her discography, capturing her contradictory feelings about an ex through both the lyrics and production. The whirring synth in the chorus really makes you feel in those emotions with her. When I first heard the siren sound at the start, I was gagged — can’t wait to see this live!
Sugar Water Cyanide - Rebecca Black
This song has been stuck in my head for weeks!!! I love the contrast between the softer sound of the verse and the harsher chorus, reflecting the mismatch of the title. Rebecca Black is HERE with an incredible genre-bending project and an artistic statement. If you only know her from the infamous “Friday” released in 2011, you need to listen to her new music!
2 shots of patron - Sophie Hunter
This is one of my new favourite artists. Her alternative pop-rap style is distinctive, and this song encapsulates that with her dynamic vocal delivery and lyrics full of references (she had me Googling with this one!). This song has been on repeat all month and I can’t wait for more releases from her.
GØD - KiNG MALA
I’m obsessed with the intense atmospheric production on this electronic alt-pop song and the world building has made me VERY excited for the upcoming album. Also a big fan of her visuals!
Be Your Drug - Circa Waves
This is a classic indie-rock song that makes me want to jump and sing along! I love the guitar and they did a great performance of this when I saw them on tour.
That’s How I’m Feeling - Jack White
I’m grateful that Jack White continues to make fantastic music with his signature vocals and catchy guitar riffs. The crowd LOVED this song when he performed this in London, the energy in the room was incredible. The phone ring sound in the second verse is a playful touch. He’s a legend!!!
What were your musical finds from February? Did you go to any shows or rediscover old favourites? Are you also a fan of these songs? I’d love to hear your thoughts, share in the comments! 💿
